Landmine blast injures 1 in western Iran

Sanandaj, Nov 28, IRNA - Explosion of a landmine, remaining from 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war in the city of Baneh, western Iran, has injured a person, a provincial official said.

Speaking with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Tuesday night, Managing Director of Kurdestan Governorate for Security Affairs Mohammad Rezaei said a forty-year-old man has been injured in his leg.

The wounded man was soon transferred to Baneh hospital, Rezaei said.

Based on the preliminary reports, the accident caused the amputation of a man's leg.

During the war imposed by Iraq on Iran, 16 million landmines were planted in over 4,200,000 hectare of lands in the Iranian provinces bordering Iraq by the army of the former Ba'athist regime.

Despite the fact that landmine areas have been cleared, explosions of mines and other explosive devices remaining from the war often cause death and injuries.
