Suicide terrorist killed before attacking Arbaeen pilgrims

Baghdad, Oct 30, IRNA – Baghdad Operations Command Headquarter announced killing of a suicide bomber in Taremiyeh, north of the capital, before being able to carry out attack on Arbaeen pilgrims heading for Imam Hossein’s (AS) holy shrine in Karbala.

The headquarter said in a statement on Monday that forces under the center managed to identify a suicide terrorist in northern Baghdad and kill him prior to undertaking any terror attack.

The terrorist had worn explosive belt and intended to target the pilgrims on the way from Baghdad to Samerra, it said.

Baghdad Operations Command Headquarter had undertaken a security scheme since a week ago to ensure security of the pilgrims marching for Arbaeen ceremony in Karbala.

The Iraqi government and security forces have so far managed to ensure safety of the pilgrims heading for Karbala, as no incident has so far been reported.

Iraq hosts over two million Iranians every year for Arbaeen, a major Shia event marking the end of 40 mourning days after Ashura marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and his 72 family members and companions at the hands of the brutal ruler Yazid in 680.

Each year, Shias flock to the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in Karbala in Iraq to participate in the mourning ceremonies.
