Sandstorm sends 120 to hospital in SE Iran

Zahedan, Oct 29, IRNA – One hundred and 20 people have referred to the hospitals in the Iranian southeastern Province of Sistan-Baluchestan for respiratory and other health problems caused by the recent sandstorm, said the provincial head of the local crisis management body on Monday.

“A total of 120 people were sent to hospital because of breathing, eye, and heart problems, out of whom 35 were treated as outpatients,” said Abdol Rahman Shahnavazi.

“Thirteen people were hospitalized due to the severity of injuries,” Shahnavazi added.

He said that the storm speed reached 80 kilometers per hour on Sunday, increasing the particulate pollution to 31 times the standard level.

Afghanistan blocked, some 20 years ago, the nourishing rivers ending in the western parts of Sistan basin in the Iranian southernmost province of Sistan-Baluchestan.

The local people, since, struggle with severe environmental changes like drought and sandstorms.
