Successful testing of herbal anti Wayfarer nanomedicine on mice

Tehran, Oct 28, IRNA- Iranian researchers in their laboratory research achieved the formulation of herbal nanomedicine treatments for Wayfarer disease. The results of clinical trials of this nanomedicine on infected mice have been successful.

Wayfarer is a skin disease that is transmitted by an infected mosquito bitten with a parasite. Each year 19,000 cases of Wayfarer disease are registered in Iran, of which 3,000 are related to Fars province. Since a patient can be transmitted as a reservoir of disease, it is important to treat illness.

Tahereh Zadeh Mehrizi, a Ph.D. student at the Pasteur Institute of Iran, said, 'Given the fact that medicines for the treatment of this disease are currently being imported, this leads to spending a lot of foreign exchange. On the other hand, these medicines also have side effects and high cost of treatment imposed on the patient and their treatment period is long.

She said, 'The plan is to synthesize a herbal nanomedicine derived from the Birch tree, which eliminates the defects of expensive imported medicines. The nanomedicine is transmitted through polymer nanoparticles derived from crabs moved to the contaminated cell.

With the emphasis on the need to use nanotechnology for effective use of nanomedicine, Zadeh Mehrizi said, 'With nanotechnology, we succeeded in increasing the therapeutic dose and reducing the toxicity of the medicine. Also, the use of nanocomposites for medicine delivery resulted in slow release of the drug and improved permeability to the parasite-infected cell.'
