Zurkhaneh sports become WoMAU member

Tehran, Oct 28, IRNA – Zurkhaneh sports and Koshti Pahlavani became a member of World Martial Arts Union (WoMAU), according to an official with the International Zurkhaneh Sports Federation (IZSF).

WoMAU held a three-day festival in the South Korean city of Chungju from Oct. 26-28 participated by 45 teams during which the directing board of IZSF were also invited, Amir-Reza Ayroum, an IZSF advisor on international affairs told IRNA over phone.

He said that the WoMAU president has agreed to admit Zurkhaneh sports in the union, but noted that the issue needs to be approved in a Union’s general assembly scheduled to convene in 2019.

One of the conditions for a sport to be admitted to the Union is its registration in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the official said, adding that Zurkhaneh sports have been registered in the UN body.

Zurkhaneh sports, traditionally practiced by Iranians, was registered in UNESCO by the Islamic Republic during a meeting in Kenya in November 2010 as an intellectual heritage of the human beings.
