Migratory birds land in Khuzestan wetlands

Ahvaz, Oct 27, IRNA - With the onset of autumn and the cooling of the air, migration of winter birds started from cold regions to Khuzestan wetlands and ponds.

The deputy chairman of the Natural Environment Protection Agency of Khuzestan said on Saturday that migration of birds passing through the north (from Russia and Siberia) to the south begins in October of each year and these birds will stop in the habitats of Khuzestan by the end of March, some birds (like the marble duck) during winter mark their return, they do not leave the province and begin reproducing in Khuzestan province.

Seyyed Adel Mola added, “Khuzestan with over 700,000 hectares, has the largest area of the country's wetlands, as well as the shores of the sea and 2,500 km of permanent river.'

He went on to say that the most important species of winter-passing birds such as ducks (Khutka) and marble duck, are in the wetlands and ponds of Khuzestan.

Flamingos are also migratory birds that grow in the Shadegan wetland and more than 2,300 pieces have been witnessed over past years.
