Disinformation threats world stability: IRNA Chief

Baku, Oct 26, IRNA – Disinformation policy threatens stability in the modern world, and the perpetrators have chosen online media, particularly the social networks, as their main tools for deceiving the audience, head of Iran's official news agency said Friday.

Addressing the 6th Baku International Humanitarian Forum, Zia Hashemi, Managing Director of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said, 'Disinformation is not a new phenomenon, but the means have been changed.'

'The liars usually choose the most favorite media of their age to deceive people, and the very media in our age are online ones,' he said.

Social media are accessible at any time and in any place, he said, adding that the briefness and simplicity of information, released by social media, have made them distinctive of other media.

Citing the findings of research, the head of IRNA said the true news are anticipated, so the audience get less excited by reading them, but the fake news are more innovative and arise surprise, fear or hatred in their audience, therefore, prompting them to republish the information.

The professional media should mitigate the adverse effect of the misinformation, Hashemi said, adding that they should fill the information gap on controversial subjects to prevent rumors from dissemination.

He said that ongoing advances of technology will increase the challenges resulting from fake news and disinformation .

The responsibility of the professional media for confronting the challenges will become heavier, IRNA Chief said.
