Ali Darini noted over 60% of car accidents in Semnan are caused by driver fatigue and sleeplessness, adding the musical road aims to keep drivers alert and awake.
He went on to say the province's proximity to desert makes drivers feel drowsy and playing music based on the speed of the car is a scientific solution to help drivers remain alert and prevent accidents.
The provincial official added 2,000 grooves have been created in the road and when the vehicles' tires touch the grooves, a mellow tune is played inside the car.
At normal speed, the music keeps the drivers from getting bored. As the driver breaks the speed limit, the music becomes intolerable and s/he is forced to slow down.
Music experts, mechanical engineers and highway engineers consider the project to be scientific and practical.
It is estimated that the project will reduce road accidents in the area by about 70 percent.
The US, Japan, China, Taiwan, Denmark, South Korea, Ukraine and San Marino are the eight countries which take advantage of musical roads.
