Envoy highlights Iran’s role in fighting terrorism

Beijing, Oct 18, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador to Japan Morteza Rahmani Movahhed said on Thursday that Iran has played a key role in fighting terrorism in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.

In a meeting with director of Japanese daily Asahi, Masataka Watanabe, he said that today's world is a strange one. Saudi Arabia which is accused of killing Khashoggi and sponsoring Daesh, Al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorist groups and massacring children and women in Yemen is a favorite of the US which always accuses Iran instead.

Expressing pleasure with his presence in premises of the newspaper, he congratulated the upcoming 140th founding anniversary of the daily.

Noting that next year is the 90th anniversary of establishment of ties between Tehran and Tokyo, he hoped that the daily will give a good coverage to the programs marking the anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Watanabe, for his part, said that Asahi opened its office in Tehran in 1976, adding that the paper has always covered developments in the Islamic Revolution.

“Iran is a major country with ancient civilization and is respected by the Japanese people,” he said.

The Asahi Shimbun is widely regarded for its journalism as the most respected daily newspaper in Japan.
