UN Chief: 1bn people escaped poverty

Tehran, Oct 17, IRNA – The United Nations Chief says thanks to efforts, made over the past 25 years to eradicate poverty, some one billion people have escaped the phenomenon.

'Twenty-five years ago, the world commemorated the first International Day for Eradication of Poverty. Since then, nearly one billion people have escaped poverty, thanks to political leadership, inclusive economic development and international cooperation,' Antonio Guterres said in a message, released on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (October 17).

Noting that over 700 million people are still in need of the very basic supplies, he said that crises, conflicts, and various barriers are preventing many people, particularly women, from the economic development.

Poverty is one of the main global challenges and a major priority for the UN, Guterres said.

He also emphasized the importance of eradicating poverty in doing justice to human beings, 'as it is not a matter of charity, but a question of justice'.
