3rd season of exploration kicks off in Parthian area Vastmin

Tehran, Oct 16, IRNA - The third exploration and probing operations has been launched in the Parthian area “Vastmin”, located in Mazandaran Province, with the purpose of determining its limits and privacy.

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted Abdulmutalleb Sharifi, head of the exploration team, as saying that in the new season it has been decided to continue probing for determining the limits of the area in the eastern and southeastern side so that the entire limits of the ancient site would be identified.

In the new season explorations will continue in the catacomb area in order to prepare the ground for the establishment of the site-museum in accordance with the agreement reached with the Cultural Heritage Deputy Office, he added.

It should be noted that in the second season unique objects such as pottery, metal, glass, ring, necklace, stamp, spear head and so on were discovered which are indicative of the administrative and fighting power of the Parthians.

Also, archeologists discovered two crypt graves including a mature man and a child together with two large clay bowls, a broken container, a tubular container and 11 eggs. The two were among 250 crypt graves being expected in the area.

Since horse was very important for the Parthian fighters, and due to their belief in the afterworld, at the time of the burial of the fighter his horse would get suffocated and buried with him so that when he would be awakened, he could use their horse as well.

Discovery shows that the burials were mostly squatting, and the burial direction was eastern-western as such the head of the dead was towards the east and his feet towards the west.

In the second exploration season it was also found out that since the graves likely belonged to a family, when in some cases there was no room for the new burial, the bones and other funeral objects of the older burial would be transferred to a rectangular-shape space or a corridor and the new burial would be put in his/her place.

The ancient site of Vastmin is located 80 km south of the city of Sari and 9 km south-east of the city of Kiasar, in Mazandaran Province.
