Khashoggi, not first victim of Saudi policies: Ex US diplomat

New York, Oct 13, IRNA- A former US diplomat in Saudi Arabia said on Saturday Jamal Khashoggi is not the first person who fell victim to the policies of Saudi Arabia.

Michael Springman said the Saudi government abducts and even murders dissidents and political critics from Lebanon or European countries.

In an interview with the Islamic Republic of News Agency (IRNA), Springman referred to the consequences of the abduction of the Saudi journalist, saying, the most serious repercussion of murdering him should be sought within Saudi Arabia, rather than in the international arena and the Riyadh-Washington ties.

He branded as irrational the policies of Riyadh and wondered how long Mohammed Bin Salman would survive.

The Saudi crown prince has also been at loggerheads with wealthy and influential Saudis and has imprisoned or killed a number of his key dissidents, the ex US diplomat stressed.

The former head of the American visa bureau in Jeddah said ousting or even assassinating the crown prince will come as no surprise for him.

Springman said Bin Salman's father, the current king, is an old man who does not have the situation under his control. The US does not know much about the details of the dispute within the Saudi royal family and this could lead to a dangerous situation.

The 59-year-old Saudi illustrious journalist, who had left the country since Bin Salman was named crown prince and moved to the US, disappeared last Tuesday after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to collect documents for his planned marriage.
