Iran's police seizes over 1.5 ton of illegal drugs

Zahedan, Oct 4, IRNA – More than 1.5 ton of illegal drugs of various kinds were uncovered and seized by police after an armed clash with smugglers in southeast Iran, a local police chief said on Thursday.

The police was tipped off about an illegal drug consignment that was to be transferred from border regions to Nikshahr city, said Brigadier General Mohammad Qanbari, Sistan and Baluchestan Province Police Chief.

The police in the city after a comprehensive probe could track the smugglers and in an ambush on their way, the cars carrying the drugs were identified, the general said.

After an hour-long armed clash with police, the smugglers left the cars and fled into the surrounding mountains, he added.

As the result of inspection of the cars, 1.45 ton of opium, 27 kg of methamphetamine and 26.6 kg of heroin was uncovered, according to the police chief.

Nikshahr is 510 km to the south of Zahedan, the provincial capital of Sistan and Baluchestan. The province, neighboring Pakistan, is frequently used for illegal drugs transit by smugglers.
