Europe, Iran finalizing mechanism to keep trade ties: Spox

Tehran, Oct 1, IRNA – Iran and Europe are getting close to a special mechanism, Islamic Republic's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday, adding that the US attempts for impeding any achievement is doomed to failure.

Since May 8 when the US withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran, the talks with Europe, China and Russia have been underway, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told reporters.

The European signatories to the deal have vowed they will find new ways, including a special financial channel, for keeping trade with Iran in the face of US sanctionws, and to cover the losses caused by Washington's withdrawal.

After the meeting in New York attended by foreign ministers of Iran and the group known as 4+1, it was agreed that the efforts will be completed, according to the spokesman.

Due to the conditions caused by the US imposing on countries in order to prevent them from trading with Iran, the talks and the mechanism reached have not been, and will not be announced so that no sabotage can stop the process, Qasemi said.

Rejecting the phrases such as oil-for-food that is used to refer to the mechanism by some sources, the Iranian diplomat said that all reports released from sources other than the foreign ministry are only speculations as they do not have exact information on the mechanism, he said.

Commenting on a recent tweet by Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif that if there is no mechanism by the European Union, Iran would leave the nuclear deal, the spokesman said that Iran is insisting on its demands, but at the same time, it hopes that the understanding can pave the way for keeping the deal alive.

'If the Europeans and other partners, for any reason, cannot secure a guarantee, the issue can affect Iran's decision and Tehran will take a way that is in line with its interests,' Qasemi said.

The US and some other countries are trying to prevent the European Union, China and Russia from coordinating with Iran and reaching agreements on the mechanisms, he said.
