Iran urges cutting terrorists' financial channels

Tehran, Sept 26, IRNA – Iran on Wednesday called for cutting the routes of terrorists' financial support and using the high capacities of joint intelligence and security for synergy and effective fight on terrorism.

Speaking at the first meeting of security council heads of the region, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani urged the continuation of joint dialogue and cooperation at high levels for solving regional issues more swiftly than the pace of terrorism expansion.

The security architecture of the region should be defined on the basis of shared interests of the countries in order that foreign powers cannot interfere in the regional affairs and the ground is set for confronting unilateralism, the Iranian official said.

Islamic Republic of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretariat hosted the Regional Security Dialogue meeting attended by the Secretaries and advisors of security councils of five Asian countries.

At the meeting, ways of fighting terrorism, extremism and new threats posed by them in West Asia were discussed.

The day-long meeting was held less than a week after a deadly terrorist attack in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz which left 24 people killed and scores injured.

At the meeting, the Russian official, Patrushev, hailed foundation of permanent secretariat for the regional meeting of national security secretaries and advisors, expressing Moscow's readiness for contributing to joint mechanisms.

He also noted that the US military presence in Afghanistan had not been effective in establishing security and stability in the country, rather it had made the security crisis more complicated.

Mohib, the Afghanistan's representative in the meeting, emphasized that his country was beside Iran in the frontline of fight against terrorism.

He also highlighted the importance of the meeting, saying that forming a joint working group is a must for creating regional mechanisms to confront the threat of terrorism.

Doval from India said the meeting will contribute a lot to reaching a joint understanding of the threats and adopting respective solutions.

Terrorists in Central Asia are strengthening their position by the financial sources obtained from illegal drug trade, he said, therefore, blocking financial channels of the terrorists should be considered in devising mechanisms for tackling the phenomenon.

China's Deng Jing Wei, as the last official who gave speech at the meeting, called for more efforts of the members to create regional mechanisms and intelligence sharing on terrorists in confronting the common threat.

He also expressed his country's preparedness for activating Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to fight terrorism and violent extremist groups.

The participants also condemned the terrorist attack in Ahvaz and expressed sympathy with Iranian government and people.
