Iran-P4+1 meeting shows US isolation: Russian MP

Moscow, Sept 26, IRNA—The talks between Iran and the remaining parties to the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal lays bare the US's isolation, not Iran's, a senior Russian diplomat said.

Konstantin Kasachev, Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation, told Russia's RIA Novosti News Agency on Tuesday that the ministerial meeting stressed the agreement between Iran and the 4+1 group- Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia- to keep Iran nuclear deal alive.

The meeting which was held on Monday shows it is the US which has been isolated not Iran, and that the current situation is totally different from the pre-agreement condition.

He said Iran and the international mediator group which included the US at the time, agreed on July 14, 2015, to settle differences over Iran's nuclear program.

The two sides signed a nuclear deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), based on which sanctions by the Security Council, the United States and the European Union were lifted in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program.

Despite Iran's commitment to the deal, the US President Donald Trump announced last May that Washington will pull out of the deal. Following Trump's withdrawal from the accord, some sanctions against Iran were restored.

The remaining parties to the deal have not approved of the US' decision and will not follow its footsteps. They are struggling to keep the international agreement instead.

Group P4+1 seek to defy the US sanctions and to expand economic cooperation with Iran.
