ECO best choice for regional cooperation

New York, Sept 25, IRNA – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Legal and International Affairs of Iran said that Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is the best choice for expansion of multilateral cooperation between the countries of the region.

Gholamhossein Dehghani made the remarks in the ECO Council of Ministers (COM), which was held on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Monday.

He highlighted the strategic importance of this regional treaty and urged member-states to broaden trade, economic, and environmental collaborations.

'ECO's importance for regional stability has made it the best option for multilateral cooperation between its member states,' he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Dehghani mentioned environmental challenges and growing interregional trade and communications, including road transport and energy networks, as the ECO’s main priorities, saying, 'In order to keep the treaty beneficial for all of the members, cooperative activities in the framework of this treaty should be evaluated periodically.'

ECO is a regional economic organization founded by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey in 1964.

Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan joined the organization after the 1990 disintegration of the Soviet Union.
