US pressure on Iran, not effective: German FM

Tehran, Sept 25, IRNA—German's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Heiko Mass, believes United States' strategy to exert maximum pressure on Iran 'will not work alone' and will only mount regional tensions.

In the meeting with ministers from Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and Iran in New York, German minister pointed to the dangers of US's maximum pressure strategy.

“If fronts harden, nothing will get better or easier, but much more dangerous and difficult,” Reuters quoted Mass as saying.

According to the London-based news agency, the remaining parties to the Iranian nuclear deal agreed on Monday to keep trying to maintain trade with Iran, despite US sanctions targeting the country's oil exports from November.

At the end of the meeting, the foreign ministers issued a joint statement which highlighted the commitment of the member states to the full and effective implementation of Iran nuclear deal. The foreign ministers acknowledged lifting sanctions and letting Iran enjoy the resultant economic benefits holds the key to the successful implementation of the nuclear accord.

The foreign ministers also expressed their deep regret at US' withdrawal from the landmark nuclear deal and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining and promoting trade relations with Iran, continuing exports of oil and gas condensate, and oil and petrochemical products.

The meeting of foreign ministers of Iran and G4+1 – France, Germany, the UK, Russia and China – was held on Monday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It was presided by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.
