Czech president urges lifting of all sanctions against Iran

Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA - Novinki Czech news agency said that the President of the Czech Republic, Miloš Zeman, in a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged the lifting of all sanctions against Iran.

The news agency reported Zeman's opposition to US sanctions against Iran.

The President of the Czech Republic, heading a top delegation to Germany, on Friday attended a meeting with Merkel where he stressed his country's interest in expanding business cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Pointing to US sanctions against Iran, he pointed out, 'As you know, the United States has decided to boycott European companies that trade with Iran, which includes Czech companies.'

'The Czech Republic and Czech companies are very interested in interacting with Iran, and I am also defending the interest of the people of my country,' the Czech president expressed opposition to sanctions against Iran.

Zeman, saying that the EU member states should be in harmony, noted that the path to further sanctions would be to move on to hell, and eliminating all sanctions would be the best possible solution.

US president Donald Trump quitted the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in May 18 and ordered the sanctions that had been lifted within the framework of the nuclear deal to be resumed. This action met with the widespread opposition from the international community, particularly the other trading parties. Europe has announced that it will protect its companies against US sanctions by updating the 'Blockade Statute'.
