Iran defeated foreign-backed Saddam: Parl. Speaker

Bandar Abbas, Sept 22, IRNA – Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein had dreamed he could bring Iran to its knees with his Ba'ath army and the support of foreign powers but he achieved none of his goals, said Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani.

Larijani made the remarks while addressing a ceremony in the Persian Gulf littoral port of Bandar Abbas which was held to mark the national occasion of the Sacred Defense Week, an event to remember the sacrifices of the Iranian armed forces and those of the nation during the eight years of war imposed on Iran on September 22, 1980, by dictator of Iraq Saddam Hussein who was later executed by hanging for his crimes against humanity in 2006.

'Though Saddam seriously damaged the Iranian and Iraqi people, he didn’t reach any of his goals; and now there is no trace of him or his Ba'ath army,' Larijani said.

Saying that Saddam tried to move the Arabs against Iran with anti-Islam mottos, Larijani added, 'He [Saddadm] had forgotten that Iranians are united.'

Iranians have had a peaceful life throughout history, and even today, they are in good terms with other nations and governments, the Majlis speaker said.

'The Iranian Armed Forces are ready to defend the country and the people more strongly than ever; the power is not bestowed by any other country and is the fruit of people's resistance and wise leadership of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei,' the Majlis speaker added.

Saying that Iran has the power to resist against |”any drunken bully', Larijani said, 'The Americans are trying to frighten neighboring countries from Iran and make their officials worried with heavy propaganda.'

Addressing the Persian Gulf states, he added, 'The US is not well-wisher for you and us; their intention is Satanic; they are enemies to Islam and Muslims and aim at looting your wealth.'

US President Donald Trump and the Secretary of State are just after trading and swindling countries out of their wealth.

Larijani urged the regional countries to stand against US excessive demands.

'The US government has chosen Israel and doesn’t value the Arabs and Palestinians whatsoever; their goal is just Israel's development,' Larijani noted.

Referring to Trumps policy of threatening the Middle Eastern countries, Larijani said, 'The US says it wishes well for the people of Iran; however, it has started an economic war against them; the US acts like terrorists. Actually the US is culturing terrorism.'

Calling the Persian Gulf 'the Gulf of friendship and fraternity', Larijani urged the littoral countries of the Persian Gulf to stop US adventurism in the region.
