Iran president: Revolution carries message of peace from the outset

Tehran, Sept 22, IRNA – Message of the 1979 Islamic Revolution from the beginning has been peace, rapprochement, friendship, brotherhood, good neighborliness and also moving in line with the divine orders, Iran’s president said Saturday.

Iran has never been the beginner of any war, Hassan Rouhani said at a ceremony held to mark the 38th anniversary of the eight-year imposed war against Iran by Iraqi toppled dictator Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath regime in 1980. The occasion is marked in Iran through week-long ceremonies nationwide and is called by Iranians the Sacred Defense Week.

The week starts in Iran as of Shahrivar 31 (according to the Iranian calendar year), September 22, to mark invasion of the Iraqi Ba'ath regime on Iran in 1980 when an eight-year imposed war began against Iran by the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein who was executed on December 30, 2006.

“Iran has never mounted attack on any country,” President Rouhani said while addressing a ceremony at the Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum in southern Tehran where the Iranian Armed Forces staged a military parade in commemoration of the Sacred Defense Week.

Sacred Defense reminds the country of people’s resistance and the armed forces’ sacrifices, the president stressed.

Iraq’s eight years of imposed war gave Iran 230,000 martyrs and 600,000 war-disabled while 43,000 Iranians were kept captive by the Iraqi forces and many others have gone missing.
