Iraqi social media users sympathize with Iran over Basra attack

Baghdad, Sept 16, IRNA – Users of social media in Iraq in a meeting with Iranian ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi expressed sympathy over recent attack on Iran consulate in Basra.

They described the attack as a measure taken by a group who were deceived and had no link with Basra residents.

Condemning the attack on Iranian diplomatic mission, they said the using social media was the best way to confront those who are after creating rift between Iran and Iraq.

Masjedi for his part underlined the growing ties between Iran and Iraq, saying the relationship between Tehran and Baghdad will not be weakened by such suspicious measures.

Angry protesters stormed the Iranian consulate in Basra, setting it on fire inside as part of demonstrations in the city against lack of services and jobs that had turned violent last week.

Demonstrators attacked the building, located in the southern part of Basra, prompting security forces to open fire to quell the protests.

The Iraqi TV channel al-Ahd broadcast several audio files showing the Saudi intelligence agency's involvement in the recent unrest in Basra province and its connection with some elements in the security apparatus of this province.

The audio files received from the network's certain sources indicated that the Saudi intelligence agency has been trying to recruit people in Basra to use them on special occasions and missions.

Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi denounced the brutal attack on Iran’s consulate general in Basra and called for the punishment of its perpetrators.
