Basra incidents not to affect Iran-Iraq ties: Top Iraqi MP

Baghdad, Sept 11, IRNA – The recent incidents in Iraqi city of Basra cannot hurt strong relations between Tehran and Baghdad, a senior Iraqi lawmaker said Tuesday.

Common history and geography link Iraq to Iran, and the irresponsible attack on Iran's consulate in Basra is rejected, Naim al-Aboudi head of Al-Sadiqoun bloc at Iraqi Parliament, told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

What happened in Basra was a savage act, motivated by foreigners' provocation and aimed at Tehran-Baghdad relations, al-Aboudi, who is also the spokesperson for Iraqi parliamentary group Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq said.

The new wave of protest against the public services and unemployment have rocked the southern Iraqi city since the beginning of this month. The protests soon turned violent as the protesters and security forces clashed.

The Iraqi health ministry has reported that at least 11 people have been killed in recent unrest.
