1st int'l Woodball championship kicks off in northwest Iran

Tabriz, Sept 10, IRNA - The first international Woodball championship kicked off in the city of Tabriz, in the northwestern Iran.

The games are held for the first time in Iran, said Abdullah Taqipour, Chairman of the Golf team in East Azarbaijan Province during the opening ceremony of the International Woodball Championship, on Monday.

The championship is taking place in Tabriz as the tourism capital of the Islamic countries in 2018 at the request of the East Azarbaijan Golf Club and the approval of the International Federation, Taqipour said.

He added that due to the existing potentials in Iran's northwestern city, he has suggested Iran Open International Woodball Championship in Tabriz be held annually and biennially.

He also said that at a meeting with the president of the Asian Woodball Federation and the Secretary General of the International Woodball Federation, it was suggested that the sporting event should be on the World Sporting Event Calendar.

The go-ahead by the World and the Asian Federations to add the tournament to the World Sporting Event Calendar would be an important and auspicious incident for Tabriz, he said.

The first international Woodball championship will be held in Tabriz on September 10-12.
Woodball is one of the most popular sports in the Southeast Asia. It is a combination of golf and polo, with all the tools made from wood.
