Belgium trying to make up for US exit from JCPOA

Tehran, Sept 6, IRNA – The Belgian deputy minister of foreign affairs hailed Iran’s approach toward the JCPOA as wise, saying that his country is trying to compensate for US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Criticizing Washington’s unilateral policies, Akhaten said that Belgium opposes such policies.

In a meeting with Head of Majlis Research Center Kazem Jalali, he described Iran as major player in the region.

Jalali is currently in Brussels at the head of a parliamentary delegation for talks with European political and parliamentary officials.

“In all regional developments and efforts leading to peace, we need the Islamic Republic of Iran’s cooperation,” Akhaten said.

“Yemeni and Syrian crises are of high importance for us,” he said, stressing that Iran’s role in solving the basic issue is very important.

Reiterating Belgium’s support for the international pact of JCPOA, he that the JCPOA contributes to Iran’s outstanding role in solving regional issues and it should earn its benefits from the JCPOA.

“We are thankful of Iran for staying in the JCPOA,” he said, noting that US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal so that Iran would follow the suit but Iran’s moves in this regard was wise.

Jalali, for his part, stressed the need for realism regarding regional developments, saying that regional issues will be settled only through regional cooperation.

Referring to the presence of terrorists in the region and their criminal acts, he added that Iran as one of the major victims of terrorism has always been forerunner in counter-terrorism operations.

Condemning trans-regional interferences in the region, Jalali said that weakening regional governments marked emergence of the terrorists.

The Vice president of World Inter-Parliamentary Union called for practical, serious and plausible measures by the EU states with regards to the JCPOA, saying that the Iranian nation demands practical steps by the European countries.

Jalali, Tehran MP, further noted that the US irresponsibly violated the multilateral deal and now it is trying to mar ties between Iran and EU.
