Imam Musa Sadr devoted to Lebanon unity: Christian politician

Beirut, Sept 1, IRNA – Imam Musa Sadr was the harbinger of unity among the Lebanese tribes and staunch opponent of tribalism, a veteran Lebanese politician said.

Speaking on the charismatic character of Imam Musa Sadr, Karim Pakradouni said national unity, coexistence and caring for the less privileged people were three pivotal issues to him.

'Tribes are a blessing for Lebanon, but tribalism is a curse,' he said during an interview with Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), citing a motto adopted by Sadr.

He was the only person who entered a church and prayed there, as a call for national unity, Pakradouni who was heading the Christian Party Kataeb for many years said.

Sadr always warned of the Zionist regime as a threat to peaceful coexistence in Lebanon.

The Lebanese home country and balanced growth and development were two key issues that later entered Taif Agreement, the Lebanese politician said.

Sadr always stressed on eradicating illiteracy and promoting free education, as well as academic education in Lebanon, he said adding that all the efforts were made in support for humanity, not gaining wealth.

Imam Musa Sadr, a religious scholar, had long been making efforts for improving the social condition of the Lebanese. Forty years ago, he disappeared a few days after he went to Libya upon an invitation from the then Libyan government, headed by Muammar Gaddafi.

The prominent Muslim figure was known for his role in creating resistance cores against the Zionist regime occupation and peaceful coexistence of followers of various religions.
