First Russian cargo train enters Astara Quay

Astara, Feb 8, IRNA – By completion of rail operation in Astara-Astara railway, the first Russian cargo train arrived in Astara Quay in Gilan province on Thursday.

Governor of Astara Yunes Ranjkesh said on Thursday that the Russian cargo train entered Iran through Azerbaijan Republic railway route and carried different types of wood by six wagons.

Astara MP in parliament Vali Dadashi said that development and equipment of Astara Quay is still underway and Iranian businessmen may use this opportunity for investment and promotion of their business.

He added that by connection of Astara railway to Rasht-Qazvin railway an all-out development is taking place in the area and at the first stage one million ton of goods will be transferred by rail and land annually.

The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan signed an agreement to create connection between railways of the two countries some two years ago.

Border town of Astara with a population of 91,000 is located west of Gilan province and has 38 kilometers of land border and 15 kilometers of sea border with Azerbaijan and its customs office is active in the field of export and import activities.
