Lavrov lauds Sochi Congress outcomes

Sochi, Jan 31, IRNA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov referred to Syria National Dialogue Congress held in Sochi as the first step in solving Syrian crisis, saying it was successful.

'During the congress, a decision was made to form a constitutional committee, comprising delegates elected during today's congress, and also to include representatives of groups who were absent for various reasons,' Russian-language media ‘TASS’ quoted Lavrov as saying.

'This achievement - the establishment of the constitutional commission - will be forwarded to the UN, in line with resolution 2254, the work of this new structure - the constitutional committee to prepare the Syrian constitution - will be organized in Geneva,' Russian FM was quoted as saying.

Syria National Dialogue Congress wrapped up in the Russian resort city of Sochi late on Tuesday adopting a 12-point statement outlining the Syrians’ view on their country’s future.

The participants of the congress also requested the UN Secretary-General to assign the Special Envoy for Syria for the assistance of the Constitutional Committee work in Geneva.
