Sochi conference step toward peace in Syria: Iran political official

Tehran, Jan 31, IRNA – Holding Sochi talks between Syria's opposing parties was a step towards establishing peace in Syria, a senior Iranian official said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the Lebanese website Al-Manar, Iran's deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Jaberi Ansari on Tuesday evening said that holding Sochi Conference was a positive step towards ending Syria's crisis.

He also noted that representatives of various groups in the Syrian political community were also present at the conference.

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress was held on Monday and Tuesday in Sochi, Russia, with the goal of resolving the seven-year-old Syrian crisis.

Jaberi Ansari added that Iran called on Turkey to urge the different opposition groups to attend the conference, noting that it appeared that their capabilities in this field are limited, according to Al-Manar.

Commenting on the Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Moscow, Jaberi Ansari said that the regime is the main beneficiary of any crisis in the Arab world in general, and the Syrian crisis in particular, therefore, it resorts to any means to influence negatively all crises.

Russia knows the region well and would not be involved in the Israeli scheme, he said.

The congress was attended by some 1,500 delegates representing the entire Syrian society.

Russian, Turkish and Iranian government delegations, as the sponsors of the Syrian talks, also attended the congress. Some bilateral meetings were also held on the first days of the talks on Monday.

On Tuesday, the United Nations special envoy for Syria Stephan de Mistura said that the talks will have an effect on the separate track of talks on Syria that has been held in Geneva.
