Top Iran MP calls for boosing security cooperation with Turkmenistan

Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA – Top Iranian lawmaker on Tuesday called for elevation of security cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan in all fields, in particular security.

'The sinister phenomenon of terrorism is a threat for all countries in the region and the world,' Chairman of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said in a meeting with Turkmenistan Ambassador to Iran Ahmad Qorbanov.

He underlined intelligence sharing and security cooperation between Tehran and Ashgabat.

The lawmaker urged removal of obstacles in the way of economic cooperation between the two neighbors, including the gas swap dispute.

The official called for exchange of parliamentary delegations between Iran and Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, the Turkmenistan envoy welcomed broadening of all-out ties with Iran.

He stressed continuation of consultations between the two countries' experts to resolve the gas swap dispute.

Iran is filing another complaint at the International Court of Arbitration (ICA) against Turkmenistan as the gas dispute is rearing its head again.

“Turkmenistan claims that Iran owes them $1.5 billion, but we believe that this figure is not correct,” Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh said on January 29.

This price is very high and should be decreased, according to the Iranian official.

“Another complaint is about the quality of the gas imported from Turkmenistan,” he said.
