Sochi meeting delayed by lame excuses

Sochi, Jan 30, IRNA – Lame excuses caused 2-hour delay in the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue, which was slated for today at 10:05 hours local time in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi, Iranian Foreign Minister's Special Assistant for Political Affairs said.

They used Syria's flag as an excuse, Hossein Jaberi Ansari told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, such excuses turned out to be a way for some Syrian opposition groups to take advantage, he said.

It is obvious that official flag of participating countries should be used in conferences, Jaberi Ansari added.

Gathering considerable number of Syrian supporters and opposition groups is regarded as the strength of the event, he noted.

Creating follow-up committees of Sochi and other commission is very important for us, Jaberi Ansari said.

A delegation from the United Nations, to be headed by Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, also arrived in Sochi on Monday.

According to Russia TV, members of 'the Path to Peaceful Change' party, Syrian National Youth Party, General Federation of Trade Unions of Syria, Arab Socialist Movement and Syrian Democratic Forces also arrived in Sochi.

Russian foreign minister has invited about 1,600 people from the Syrian parties to attend the event which was initiated by Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Iran, Russia and Turkey, three peace guarantors in Syria, reached an agreement in late 2017 on holding the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue in Sochi.

Since March 2011, Syria has been suffering from unrest and terrorist acts. Several rounds of talks have been held on Syria in Astana, Kazakhstan, since January 2017.

Iran, Russia and Turkey are the initiators of ceasefire in Syria.
