Delay in Syrian national dialogue in Sochi

Sochi, Jan 30, IRNA – A Russian official said Tuesday that the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue, which was slated for today at 10:05 hours local time in Russia's Black Sea city of Sochi, will start with some delay in the day.

According to the Russian official, the Sochi meeting is waiting for the arrival of a number of Syrian delegates who are on way to the congress venue.

The official rejected the news that a disagreement between UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and the Russian delegation caused the delay.

Formation of a commission to follow up adopting a new Syria constitution and preserving the territorial integrity of the country are among the main aims of convention of the Sochi meeting.

The first day of Syrian Congress of National Dialogue was held on Monday (January 29) following bilateral meetings and trilateral consultations between representatives of Iran, Russia and Turkey as the initiators of ceasefire in Syria.

Iran, Russia and Turkey, three peace guarantors in Syria, reached an agreement in late 2017 on holding the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue in Sochi.

Since March 2011, Syria has been suffering from unrest and terrorist acts. Several rounds of talks have been held on Syria in Astana, Kazakhstan, since January 2017.
