Iranian wrestlers crowned Takhti Cup champions

Tehran, Jan 26, IRNA - The Iranian Greco-Roman wrestling team has been crowned as the champion of the 2018 Takhti Cup international wrestling tournament held in Mahshahr in southwestern province of Khuzestan.

Iranians clinched three gold, one silver and eight bronze medals to the championship title with 192 points.

Turkey won two gold, four silver and one bronze medal to finish runner-up with 171 points and the Kazakh wrestling team clinched 2 gold, 2 silver and one bronze medals to take the third place with 145 points.

Takhti International wrestling competitions started in the port city of Mahshahr on Thursday.

Twelve prestigious teams participated in the 38th International Senior Greco-Roman Tournament ‘Takhti Cup’.

The event held with participation of teams from Cuba, Finland, Romania, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Italy from January 25-26.

The international wrestling tournament titled 'Takhti Cup' is held every year in Iran to honor the legendary Iranian wrestler.

Gholam-Reza Takhti was born in 1930 and was called “Jahan Pahlavan,” which means “World Champion” due to his huge success in international wrestling championships and his chivalrous behavior and sportsmanship during competitions.
