Syria welcomes Iran's religious activities

Damascus, Jan 23, IRNA – Any kind of religious activities undertaken by Iran in Syria is welcomed by Damascus, Syrian minister of religious endoments said here on Tuesday.

'Iran's religious activities are in line with strengthening unity in the Islamic Ummah,' Mohammad Abdul-Sattar al-Sayyed, Syrian Minister of Awqaf (Religious Endowments) said in a meeting with representative of Iran's Supreme Leader in Damascus Ayatollah Abolfazl Tabatabaei.

Talking of the regional issues, al-Sayyed said Saudi Arabia is angry about cordial ties between Syria and Iran.

'Riyadh is making plots against Damascus every day,' said the minister adding, Saudi Arabia is after spreading extremism in Syria.

He went on to say that Saudi Arabia baselessly accuses Iran of expanding thought of Shiism, while Riyadh's plots have no place among intellectuals including Shia and Sunni Muslims.

He further stressed the need to promote unity between the Syrian and Iranian nations.

Meetings between Ulema of different religions can help strengthen unity among Muslims and make them get closer, the minister added.

For his part, the Iranian Ayatollah said regular meetings among Ulema are fruitful for Muslims' unity.

The today meeting was held in the Syrian capital to mark the birth anniversary of Hazrat-e Zeinab (SA), the sister of the third Shia Imam, on January 23.
