Pres. Rouhani: Iran supporting unified, integrated Iraq

Tehran, Jan 21, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that Iran has always been supporting a unified and integrated Iraq.

President Rouhani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Prime Minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan region Nechirvan Barzani.

It is a duty for all the regional countries and ethnic groups residing in the region to defend the sovereignty and security of the borders, the president said, adding that the foreign powers have never been considerate for the regional people.

Referring to historical deep-rooted relations between Iran and Iraqi Kurds, President Rouhani called for further efforts to deepen friendly ties between the two nations.

Noting that Iraqi Kurdistan region is an important part of the country, he said that regional stability and security should not be allowed to be undermined under any pretext.

The president said that all the ethnic groups in the region have to be allowed to enjoy their legitimate rights within the framework of the Constitution and territorial integrity of the countries.

The prime minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, for his part, said that all the different sides have to remain committed to the Iraqi Constitution and seek to find solutions within the framework of the Constitution.

Hailing Iran's support for the Iraqi government and nation, the Kurdistan region in particular, against the aggressions of Daesh terrorist group, Barzani said: 'We have always been thankful of Iran's support for Iraq in this fight.'

He assured the Iranian president that Iraqi Kurdistan region will allow no one to use its soil to pose any threat to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Barzani arrived in Tehran last night for talks with high-ranking Iranian officials.

Prior to his visit to Iran, Barzani traveled to Baghdad where he met Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
