Lebanon facing Saudi financial warfare: Journalist

Beirut, Jan 20, IRNA – Saudi Arabia has imposed a mounting financial warfare against Lebanon, one of the worst in the country has seen during the recent past decades, said a prominent Lebanese journalist.

Through the imposition of such a financial warfare against Lebanon, millions of dollars of Saudi money has gone to undermining Lebanon's credibility, Hassan Moukalled, Editor-in-chief of the Arabic-language magazine 'Al Aamar val Eqtessad' (development and economy) told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in a recent exclusive interview.

The Saudis originally started their financial warfare in March 2016, while it reached its climax after Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri was put under arrest in Riyadh, Moukalled said.

Riyadh forced many investors to withdraw their assets from the Lebanese markets, he said.

Even the Saudi Foreign Minister, Adel Al Jubeir, accused the banks in Lebanon of money-laundering and banned extension of bank drafts to the country.

According to the Lebanese journalist, Saudi Arabia has not only withdrawn its money from the Lebanese banks, but it has also forced the businessmen and traders to stop their engagements with the country.

Moukalled went on to emphasize that it is in fact the United States which is behind the scene of the current financial warfare against Lebanon.

They were the Americans who provided the Saudis with an opportunity to harm the financial stability in Lebanon, he said.

What is going on, he said, constitutes an integral part of the war waged by the US, he added.
