Russian FM calls for saving JCPOA

Tehran, Jan 19, IRNA - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the importance of preserving the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the G5+1 (US, UK, France, Russia, China plus Germany) in 2015.

The overwhelming majority of the international community recognizes that the July 2015 agreement between Iran and the six world powers is making a tangible contribution to strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime and to the maintenance of international peace and security, Lavrov said while addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction on Thursday.

'We cannot for the benefit of political agendas of certain countries abandon a genuine achievement of international diplomacy,' he said.

Lavrov referred to threats to the JCPOA on the 50th anniversary of signing of the NPT, Xinhua reported.

The Russian foreign minister noted that the Security Council itself bears a responsibility for the implementation of the deal as it supported the JCPOA by unanimously adopting Resolution 2231 in 2015.

The US President Donald Trump said on Friday that European allies and Congress have to work with him to fix “the disastrous flaws” in the nuclear pact or face a US exit.

Trump is after changing the text of the international nuclear accord.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that the JCPOA is not renegotiable.
