Belarusian officials pay tribute to Sanchi victims

Moscow, Jan 19, IRNA – Ambassadors and foreign diplomats residing in Belarus and the country’s political figures attended Iran’s Embassy in Minsk to sign a memorial book for the victims of Sanchi and pay tribute to them.

A number of ambassadors, resident diplomats, representatives of international offices and some Iranian expatriates in Belarus took part in the ceremony to express sympathy with the bereaved families.

The ambassadors of Syria, Japan, EU, Libya and resident diplomats of embassies of Palestine, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Czech, Britain, Venezuela, Georgia, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan Republic were present in the gathering.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in a message on Tuesday expressed condolences to President Hassan Rouhani, the Iranian nation and families of the victims.

The Sanchi oil tanker, carrying 136,000 tons of condensate from Iran to South Korea, caught fire on January 6 after colliding with a Hong Kong-registered bulk freighter about 160 nautical miles (184 km) off China's coast near Shanghai. Iranian officials said on Sunday that the vessel had completely sunk and available evidence indicated that all crew members had died soon after the collision and its subsequent powerful blast.
