Iran calls for int'l assistance to contain tanker fire

London, Jan 12, IRNA – Deputy Iranian envoy to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) called for international cooperation to contain the fire on the Iranian oil tanker in the East China coast.

Mandana Mansourian, deputy permanent representative of Iran to IMO made the call in a meeting with Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim in London.

During the meeting, Mansourian who is also the representative of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) at IMO urged immediate control of the fire and saving the life of Iranian seamen trapped in the blazing tanker since January 6.

Mansourian talked also with China and Panama representatives in IMO by phone and called for help to rescue the Iranian seamen. IMO officials as well as China and Panama envoys promised to do their best to pursue the fate of the oil tanker's crew.

The Iranian tanker collided with a Chinese vessel off East China coast on January 6 and all on board went missing. The tanker was carrying condensates to South Korea.

All 32 crew members on board the oil tanker have gone missing but one body was found. All the 21 crew members on board the bulk freighter who are Chinese nationals, have been rescued.

Operations to extinguish the fire and determine the fate of 32 missing crew members are still continuing.
