UNSC inconclusive meeting on Iran a blunder for US foreign policy

New York, Jan 6, IRNA – The United Nations Security Council session on Iran which was held due to US' insistence proved to be a foreign policy defeat, as Iran protests were recognized as domestic and irrelevant to regional or international security.

After some Iranians took to the streets to protest against unemployment and high prices, and, with the provocation of certain foreign and anti-Islamic Revolution media, some elements penetrated the lines of protestors to drive the peaceful protests toward violence, US President Donald Trump overtly supported the rioters assuming that the former US administration had made a mistake about Iran riots in 2009.

Following that, United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, whose animosity is as clear as daylight and tries to push Iran on top of the UNSC agenda through different subjects so that the Zionist regime can get rid of the international pressures and breathe a sigh of relief, was assigned to make scene against Iran in front of the press.

She urged the UNSC and the Human Rights Commission in Geneva to hold a session about human rights and the way the rioters were treated in Iran.

The UNSC members, feeling what she was going to do, did not let her to misuse this opportunity for political ends, such as harming Iran Nuclear Deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and warned against it.

The Kazakh representative who chaired the meeting openly said that the protest in Iran is not an issue of regional or international security and it is not in the UNSC responsibilities to deal with it.

Kairat Umarov added that the protests have abated and hoped that the issue would come to and end soon, such issues shouldn't harm the JCPOA, and that all the countries should be committed to the deal and the UN resolutions.

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a Twitter message released on Saturday, “The UNSC rebuffed the US' naked attempt to hijack its mandate. Majority emphasized the need to fully implement the JCPOA and to refrain from interfering in internal affairs of others. Another FP [foreign policy] blunder for the Trump administration.”
