2017; Shiny year for Iran cinema

Tehran, Dec 31, 2017 – Iran's cinema has recently managed to enjoy outstanding achievements in several prestigious global festivals and has portrayed a new horizon in the seventh art.

Although Iranian cinema does not enjoy the technical and professional facilities compared with the US and European cinema, it has recently shined in several global festivals.

Thanks to the Iranian cinema's recent dazzling achievements, its role could not be easily ignored due to its domestic and international fans.

In 2017, Iranian cinema shined in different international arenas and won several prizes in several prestigious cinematic events, including Cannes International Film Festival, Academy Awards Oscar as well as Venice International Film Festival.

** Academy Awards Oscar:
Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s 'The Salesman' has won the 2017 Academy Award for best foreign-language film.

The award was accepted by two prominent Iranian-Americans representing Farhadi, who boycotted the Oscars over US President Donald Trump's executive order banning visitors from seven Muslim countries.

Anousheh Ansari, famed for being the first female space tourist, and Firouz Naderi, a former director of Solar Systems Exploration at NASA, were Farhadi's representatives at Academy Awards.

**Cannes Film Festival: Late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s new experimental work “24 Frames” also appeared as a special screening in the 70th Anniversary Events of the Cannes Film Festival which was held on May 17-28, 2017.

Kiarostami completed “24 Frames” months before his death in July 2016.

Meanwhile, Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s “Lerd” (A Man of Integrity) won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.

**Venice Film Festival: Iranian drama ‘No Date, No Signature’ also managed to win Best Director Award for Vahid Jalilvand and Best Actor Award for Navid Mohammadzadeh at the Venice Horizons sections of the 74th Venice Film Festival.

'No Date, No Signature' which won Best Director and Best Supporting Actor awards at the 35th Fajr Film Festival, managed to once again draw the attentions of festival juries to the top-notch performance of Mohammadzadeh and Jalilvand’s outstanding achievement as the director of the film.

The 74th Venice International Film Festival was held from 30 August to 9 September 2017 in Venice, Italy.
