Eco-pol situation worsens in post-referendum Northern Iraq

Erbil, Dec 30, IRNA – The referendum in Northern Iraq was swimming against the current and the cause of worsening political and economic issues, said an Iraqi Kurdish journalist in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday.

'Masoud Barzani believed the Iraqi Kurdistan had nothing to lose, so the plebiscite should be held despite all oppositions, while a big part of the society was against it,' Managing Director of Shar Press Kamal Rauf told IRNA.

Rauf believed that the referendum on Sepetember 25 brought about a big defeat in economy and politics of the Northern Iraq and intensified the 20-year old crises.

'The protests of the recent days were unprovoked, hence they were turned violent; no parties dare to claim leadership of the protests,' said the renowned Iraqi journalist.

'Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been deeply corrupt; the urban infrastructures were not constructed, good ties were not established with Baghdad, the relations with the friends has also been disrupted; all these have created the current situation,' he added.
