Iran underlines need for boosting Tehran-Baghdad economic, social ties

Tehran, Dec 29, IRNA – Iran's Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani on Thursday called for further development of economic and social ties between Iran and Iraq.

In a meeting with the visiting Iraqi Minister of Youth and Sports Abdul-Hussein Abdul Redha Abtaan, Larijani said, “Tehran-Baghdad relations should not be confined to security issues; rather development of economic and social relations is essential.”

Noting that Iraq has passed through security challenges, Larijani said that forging political consensus is one of the substantial issues in Iraq to prevent other countries’ adventurism.

Stressing the need for promoting sports and social ties between Iran and Iraq, Larijani hailed Iraq’s achievements in the field of sports in recent years, saying that sports interaction between the two countries is positive and notable, as a number of Iraqi athletes are currently engaged in Iran.

“Fortunately, Iraqi nation powerfully achieved strategic victories against Daesh in which the country’s armed forces, particularly Popular Mobilization Forces played a crucial role,” he said.

Abtaan, for his part, appreciated Iran’s supports to his country, saying that its positive approach in support of Iraq paved the way for victory over the terrorist group of Daesh.

One of the capacities for promoting bilateral ties is sports, as it is one of the best instruments for fighting terrorism, narcotics and social woes, he said, calling on the two countries to pay more attention to it.

Iraq has made good investment in promoting sports infrastructures, he said, noting that Iraqi government is keen on boosting ties with Iran in the field.
