Earthquake rocks SE Iran again

Kerman, Dec 25, IRNA - An earthquake measuring 4.4 on Richter scale jolted Kuhbanan in Kerman province on Monday. Another quake had jolted the area on December 21.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 8:45 hours local time (5:15 GMT) in an area located at 31.39 degrees latitude and 56.27 degrees longitude and in the depth of 6 km underground.

Some 25-50 percent of the ancient structures were damaged, Mohammad Hassan Talebian, cultural heritage deputy at the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran (ICHHTO) said following the last Thursday quake.

Kuhbanan City has over 250 ancient sites consisting of gristmill, holy shrines, towers, castles, baths, ab anbar (ancient water reservoirs), historical epigraphy, rocky houses, natural aquarium and mosques, he said.
