Iran UN envoy hails resolution on combating dust pollution

New York, Dec 24, IRNA – The UN approval of Iran's initiative resolution on dust pollution demonstrated that the issue has turned to be an international one, said Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo.

Speaking to the correspondent of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in New York, Khoshroo said that combating the dust phenomenon needs serious contributions on national, regional and global levels.

'As a result of the attempts by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the dust phenomenon is now a globally recognized issue, and the reason for this is the approval of the resolution to address the issue of dust in the [the Second Committee] of UN General Assembly [on Wednesday],' Khoshroo said.

The UN conference on how to combat the dust issue was a significant measure on an international level taken as a result of the initiative by Iran, he said.

Iran's ambassador to the UN also said that the world body wants to help all the countries affected by the dust phenomenon through collaboration among all the UN agencies.

'I should repeat again that combating the dust phenomenon requires national determination and regional and international cooperation,' Khoshroo said.

He said that a mechanism is expected to be set up by the UN to coordinate and foster cooperation among the agencies in the world body, as well as devising an action plan and a global strategy to address the issue.
