Quake damages 26 historical sites in southeast Iran

Tehran, Dec 23, IRNA – The 5.2-magnitude earthquake which rocked Kuhbanan in Kerman province on December 21 seriously damaged 26 historical sites.

Some 25-50 percent of the ancient structures were damaged, Mohammad Hassan Talebian, cultural heritage deputy at the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran (ICHHTO) said on Saturday.

“Kuhbanan City has over 250 ancient sites consisting of gristmill, Holy Shrines, towers, castles, baths, Ab anbar (ancient water reservoirs), historical epigraphy, rocky houses, natural aquarium and mosques,” he said.

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Kuhbanan in Kerman province city.

The epicenter of the quake was registered 3 kilometers from Kuhbanan, 27 kilometers from Kianshahr and 51 kilometers from Ravar.
