British museum to allocate galleries to Islam

Tehran, Dec 23, IRNA - Head of the British Museum in a meeting with director of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) Hartwig Fischer announced that two large galleries of the British Museum will be allocated to Islam next year.

“During the meeting Fischer outlined the activities of the British Museum about the Iranian collections available in that museum,” RICHT reported.

“The targets of the British Museum are focused on the formation of cultural relations between the nations and countries and, for example, holding an exhibition in Mumbai, India on the relations between Iran and India and organizing a conference related to that exhibition in London are among strategic goals of the British Museum,” he added.

Fischer went on to say that the motto of the British Museum is “a museum of the world, a museum for the world” and while referring to the cultural relations between the nations, ethnic groups and communities from the past millenniums up to the past decades, he talked about maritime connection of India with the Middle East, Far East, Southeast Asia and Australia.

As for the upcoming programs of the British Museum, he said they intended to allocate two large galleries of the British Museum to Islam and noted that this was for the first time that part of the space of the museum was allocated to a “religion”.

“Setting up such an exhibition aims to show a generality in every place of every country where Islam has a serious presence,” he noted.

“Showing cultural similarities in the world of Islam was another purpose for organizing such a permanent exhibition,” he added.

Also speaking in the meeting, RICHT Director Seyed Mohammad Beheshti reiterated that museums should first demonstrate the identity and culture of communities and then deal with similarities among the ethnic groups.

“Historical museums are places which show the origin and nationality of the nations, ethnic groups and communities,” he said referring to the importance of the subject and position of culture in the historical museums.
