Iran’s athlete wins Asian Zourkhaneh Champs fast spin

Karaj, Dec 23, IRNA – Iranian athlete Ali Jaliljou ranked 1st in the fast spin field of the 6th Asian Zourkhaneh Sports and Koshti Palahvani Championship in the Philippines.

Jaliljou with 549 points snatched a gold medal in the event, head of Alborz Pahlevani and Zourkhaneh committee Meysam Movahedi told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

“Iraqi rival with 315 points and the Philippines athlete with 102 points ranked second and third, respectively,” he said.

“Singaporean rival having 70 points also ranked third jointly,” he added.

Zourkhaneh Sports and Koshti Palahvani is a traditional system of athletics originally used to train Persian warriors in Iran since the Achaemenid Empire.

It combines martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and music. Recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as among the world's longest-running forms of such training.

Practiced in a domed structure called the Zourkhaneh, training sessions consist mainly of ritual gymnastic movements and climax with the core of combat practice, a form of submission-grappling called Koshti Pahlavani.
