UN's Syria envoy welcomes detainee exchange agreement

Baku, Dec 23, IRNA – UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has welcomed the agreement about exchange of detainee, abducted and dead bodies reached at the eighth round of Syria peace talks in Astana on Friday.

The agreement between the peace guarantors, i.e. Iran, Turkey, and Russia, to form a working group for the exchange of people and information about disappeared people is praise-worthy, said de Mistura.

He said that the agreement is the first step for the opposing sides to reach a final deal.

Certain advances in strengthening trust, including humanitarian demining, are note-worthy, he said and urged unconditional humanitarian aids throughout all Syria.

The eighth round of Syrian peace talks started in Astana, Kazakhstan was held on Thursday and Friday, with the presence of all the opposing groups and the peace guarantors -- Iran, Russia, and Turkey.

The meeting discussed ways to put an end to the humanitarian crisis in the country on Friday and agreed upon setting a date for convention of the Syrian National Dialog Congress.
