Iran wins Zurkhaneh & Koshti Pahlavani Asian Championships title

Tehran, Dec 23, IRNA – For the sixth time, Iranian squad managed to grasp the title of the 6th Asian Zurkhaneh Sports and Koshti Palahvani Championship in the Philippines.

The Iranian team stood the first place after winning eight gold, three silver and one bronze medals in the competitions held in Tanauan City, the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Iraq stood the second place. Nepal and the Philippines jointly finished in third place.

Zurkhaneh Sports and Koshti Palahvani is a traditional system of athletics originally used to train Persian warriors in Iran since the Achaemenid Empire.

It combines martial arts, calisthenics, strength training and music. Recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as among the world's longest-running forms of such training.

Practiced in a domed structure called the Zurkhaneh, training sessions consist mainly of ritual gymnastic movements and climax with the core of combat practice, a form of submission-grappling called Koshti Pahlavani.
